Hello,
My name is Alan Williamson Jr., I am 56 years old live in Plymouth, MA with my yellow Labrador Ryker and two cats Fluffy and Snow. I am married to Khate Quismundo, a beautiful woman from the Philippines whom I share two beautiful boys Ian age 10 and Logan age 8.
I have loved the game of darts all my life. I can remember watching my parents and their friends play when I was very young in my kitchen with a board hanging on the far end of the wall.
My first board was a coiled paper board I had gotten for Christmas sometime around when I was 8 years old. It was hung on my bedroom wall with no throw line and I'm sure resting at the improper height and I am also certain you were not suppose to have your brother swing the board back and forth as you were trying to shoot yet that is how it began...
After years of wearing out that board for fun and leaving home at the age of nineteen, I moved into my first home and promptly hung my new bristle dartboard and played... and played...
Right about that time a friend I was working with in real estate in started to shoot with me at my home. His name was Bob Delorey and he was a wiley veteran of the Minuteman Dart League in the Boston Area and knew the game well. I think I lost many a game to Bobby in the beginning but he saw that while I was still raw with knowledge of the game I could shoot at what I was told to hit. Soon we were off to my first dart/pool store to buy a good set of darts no more would I play with my plastic flight brass barrel darts. I think $40.00 bought me a set of 19 gram Pacer darts that day 90/10 tungsten add to that a few sets of Dynastar plastic flights and I was high tech baby... so I played more...
Moving to Quincy MA a few years later when I turned 21 I was introduced to a whole new world of dart players at the Pubs of South Boston, MA. It didn't take long for me to get the attention of a few dart captains of the Minuteman Dart League League. I was recruited to a Team by a fellow dart player and good friend Lee Ashfield to play on his summer team in the A division with two other rookies Rich Stearns and Chris Swenson. This was a new awakening because not only did this change things (now people were watching and counting on you) but I was in the best league in the world and one of the top divisions.
My confidence had always been high and when I lost my first game I couldn't understand it... there was someone better than me? Not Possible... LOL well I learned there were a lot of people better than me so I played more... That summer with the guidance of Lee Ashfield and the top player on our team Darryl Youngblood I learned some new things and dart strategy started to consume me. You see I m a thinker and if I wasn't as good as someone I liked the idea that I could even the odds up by out thinking them. So I played and we won the finals of that first ever dart league for me and the funny thing is we beat my friend Bobby Delorey's team (Ginzingers) in the finals that year (sorry Bobby).
Armed with new dart strategy and a stinging win in the finals I was recruited onto my old friends team for the next season. The Phantoms were born... playing out of the Tsing Tao in Pembroke, MA I played with some great guys Joe McSharry, Mark Jernstadt, Rob Robinson, Bob Delorey, Jim Delorey, Jim Flannigan, and and very old friend of mine who happened to know Delorey as well who took me to a whole new level of darts Jim Rabbit. Rabbit was a very good player but he was the one who would drill into you what to shoot at and WHY. I would argue a dart and he would say there is only one correct target to shoot at! Don't vary from it. We had many a great nights shooting league darts mostly in the A division and we had a great rivalry with the Rockland Eagles another power packed team for many years.
Finally it was time... I had honed my skills... my knowledge was as good as anyone on the game and I was as I said a thinker so I became Captain and formed what I remember as the best team of people that I knew of at the time and tried for what I considered the best possible goal. To win the State Finals in the A division of the best dart league in the world in the Fall which was the hardest season to win.
We had the team Bob & Jim Delorey both rock solid dart players although Jim could use a calculator, a math tutor and some post it notes on his arm from time to time (love ya Jimmy). We had Jim Rabbit at the top of his game and chief motivator of our team and chief de-motivator of the opposing team (more on this later). Big John C-YA! Silva who was this big scary biker looking guy who not only tell you what he was about to hit but yell C-YA! in your face after he did it... and he always did. Another rookie John Falcone who was just a great shooter willing to learn. Our Eagle pals Joe McSharry, Rob Robinson, Mark Jernstadt and our anchorman and the best pure shooter I've ever played with Paul Simpson he had a dart stroke you would die for. He would usually show up 2 minutes before his match pull out his arrows and promptly fire off a Ton 120 on for his 301 match he was that good.
This folks was a dart team, knowledgeable, talented, big and scary LOL. Well we cruised along to the finals beating very good Irish teams and the best of Boston had to offer. We were to play the Sportsmen Lounge from Worcester, MA a team the practically won every year because there was no super A division in their area (practically pros). We trudged to Worcester and got out our arrows and a well thought out lineup. Back and forth we went that night winning a game loosing a game when finally Jim Rabbit started to get to our opponents with some loud cheering and boisterous energy. Our last darts thrown that night had given us a 6-5 lead in games winner take all at 12 games going back to our place 2 nights later. We were psyched and ready to play.
I gave them our best that night... I shot our best six shooters on the team and they battled in some of the best games I've ever seen thrown. One cricket game alone went over 600 points on each side of the chalkboard. And they promptly beat us 7 straight games... My guys were great players these guys were better.
Sitting alone after with my head down my wife asked if I was OK. I was fine and told her I just shot my dream team of who's who in the Boston Area and we got stomped. My hats off to the Sportsmen Lounge for that night of great darts. The team broke up an I lost some desire to captain a new team of rookies so I took some time off from the leagues.
From time to time I'll take a few beers and Lincoln's from a few wannabe's at the local pub. I still practice at home and when I casually walk to the board and throw that RO9 or Ton 180 or group a few Ton 140's I can still say I got it and smile...
My dart room at home has become somewhat of a museum I guess and even though my wife complains a bit about my obsessive ness it is still one of my passions and I'll continue to enjoy the game. Until then anyone looking for a player....????
